Award-Winning Journalist Claire Hughes Joins PEP as a Copywriter

Accomplished journalist Claire Hughes has joined the creative department at the Patient Experience Project (PEP).

Hughes brings more than 3 decades of experience in communications and journalism to her role as a copywriter at PEP. Hughes is responsible for writing content across various formats, including both print and digital. Before joining PEP, Hughes worked as a reporter at the Times Union, the leading newspaper in New York’s Capital Region. Hughes covered the healthcare sector, highlighting the impact federal and state policies have on the local level; as well as writing feature articles on such topics as the opioid epidemic, infectious diseases, end-of-life issues, and challenges in accessing healthcare. Previously, she was the communications director and web editor at the Rockefeller Institute of Government, a nonprofit think tank in Albany where she translated academic work for press releases and social media. Earlier in her career, Hughes was a reporter at the Capital District Business Review (Albany Business Review); and a business editor at The Record, a newspaper in Troy, New York.

“Claire is a talented and well-respected writer and journalist whose work clearly demonstrates her ability to tell a story effectively,” explains Sean O’Donnell, associate creative director at PEP. “She has an amazing ability to translate complex topics into understandable language and an uparalleled knack for conveying the human impact of any topic. All of these qualities make her a perfect fit for the work we do with patients and caregivers at PEP.”

Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and is currently taking graduate courses in bioethics through Clarkson University. Hughes is a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists. She has been honored with awards for excellence in journalism from numerous organizations, including the New York State Associated Press, the Society for Features Journalism, the Association of Health Care Journalists, the New York Press Association, and the National Press Foundation.
